Misdemeanor vs. Felony Charges in Florida
The state of Florida classifies misdemeanors as 1st and 2nd degree. 1st degree misdemeanors are punishable by up to 1 year in jail, 1 year of probation, and a $1,000 fine. 2nd degree misdemeanors are less extreme and can result in up to 2 months in jail, 6 months of probation, and a $500 fine.
Felony charges are a little more complex as the Florida courts categorize them in five ways: capital, life, 1st degree, 2nd degree, and 3rd degree. The punishments can range from 1 year to life in prison, significant probation, and hefty fines. In some cases, like drug trafficking, tens of thousands of dollars in fines are mandatory.
